NFL Preseason Week 1 Recap

Unlike most football analysts, I don't believe that the preseason doesn't matter. You can observe a lot if you pay attention to the fundamental aspects of the game. Let's analyze a few of the top games from Week 1 of the preseason. If you're a true fan, hit the like button.

New York Jets 27 at Carolina Panthers 0

In the matchup between the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, the first overall draft pick, Bryce Young, could miss significant time this year if the offensive line doesn't improve. While acquiring new players is one approach, it might be more prudent to protect Bryce by improving his pass protection. He was on the field for 11 plays and was sacked 4 times. He's at risk of getting injured.

Zach Wilson seems ready to back up Rodgers, and the new offensive scheme appears to suit him well. The Jets' defense shows potential due to its depth. Additionally, are we seeing Rodgers call some plays?

Indianapolis Colts 19 at Buffalo Bills 23

During the Indianapolis Colts vs. Buffalo Bills game, some might have mistaken Anthony Richardson for Mahomes due to his sidearm pass. However, the execution of the sidearm throw was subpar. While Richardson showed promise, he needs more practice reps. His footwork is impressive, and it's surprising to note his solid mechanics. Colts fans should brace themselves for a developmental year for Richardson. He will improve, and I appreciate the motion offense. Is concern warranted for the Colts' offensive line?

Notably, the Bills possess significant depth in their skill positions, featuring players like Murray, Mims, and Ankou.

Tennessee Titans 17 at Chicago Bears 23

The game between the Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears didn't provide much insight into Justin Fields, as every pass he attempted was incomplete. However, it's evident that the Bears' offense has the potential to be lethal with a multitude of skill players. Last year, Moore held the WR1 position, but now DJ and Claypool have stepped up, with Moore taking on the slot role. Herbert also shows remarkable prowess, suggesting a promising offensive year for the Bears. Their offensive line appears competitive and agile, as demonstrated by their successful screen pass plays.

Levis' mobility bodes well for future play-action success. Willis, too, seems improved in his RPO action compared to his previous performance, although his throws vary in accuracy. While they both made significant errors, holding onto the ball for too long, they have time to develop.

Jacksonville Jaguars 28 at Dallas Cowboys 23

I'm placing my bets on the Jacksonville Jaguars reaching the conference finals this year. The underrated wide receiver corps, coupled with a well-coached defense that excels in takeaways, bodes well for their prospects. Coach Penderson has a track record of nurturing young quarterbacks' development. Although Trevor Lawrence might throw numerous interceptions, his aggressive style is acceptable. Furthermore, there's potential for the Cowboys' defense to become the league's top-ranked.

Regrettably, I have little to say about the Cowboys, and perhaps I'll have more insights next week if they play their starters.

Houston Texans 20 at New England Patriots 9

Stroud played the first two series of the day, completing two out of four attempts for a mere 13 yards and an interception. His performance was lackluster. This year, it might not be advisable to start CJ. The offensive line ranked 19th last year, primarily due to Howard's performance at RT, but now concerns about the entire OL have emerged. Houston lacks experienced wide receivers to bail Stroud out. Despite the desire to see him play, consider this: start Davis Mills for half the season, and then let CJ play after Week 9. This strategy aims to avoid potential injuries and the erosion of CJ's confidence. I welcome your thoughts in the comments.

Did Will Anderson Jr. participate in the game?

Patriots' defense remains consistently impressive, often unearthing talent throughout the draft. However, their offense seems lackluster, and it's time to halt the Zappe discussions. I'm eagerly anticipating seeing Mac operate in this offensive setup.

Green Bay Packers 36 at Cincinnati Bengals 19

Apologies, but I can't help you with the sentiment towards Jordan Love.

The Green Bay Packers should fare well this year. Their strong wide receiver corps, stacked RB lineup, and play-action-focused offense are conducive to the success of a young quarterback like Love. This season, Love is poised to pleasantly surprise many. The year ahead will provide valuable insights into Matt Lafleur and his team's dynamics.

As for the Bengals, our knowledge remains limited, as we won't observe their starters until Week 1 of the regular season.

Atlanta Falcons 19 at Miami Dolphins 3

The matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins intrigued me. I was keen to witness Mike White operating as a quarterback in this offensive setup, considering he might play important games if Tua sustains an injury. Unfortunately, White's performance left much to be desired. I hope he avoids injury. The Dolphins are poised to be a swift team, with many of their backups showcasing speed.

Ridder didn't play, which seems inexplicable. On a positive note, I appreciate the depth of the Falcons' running back lineup.

Denver Broncos 17 at Arizona Cardinals 18

To the fans of the Cardinals, how is the starting quarterback looking for Week 1? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

Regrettably, Wilson's performance isn't impressive, partly due to the offensive line. His mobility appears compromised, and the lack of time in the pocket is detrimental to the team's performance. While I hope to be proven wrong, it's saddening to witness Wilson's struggles. I still root for Russ to excel.

Pittsburgh Steelers 27 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17

If Kenny Pickett proves to be competent, I must admit my frustration, as the Steelers continue to excel even after two decades. Their ability to consistently select talented wide receivers, evident from the Pickens to Pickett connection, poses a problem for opposing teams. This dynamic puts the Browns at a disadvantage, and it's frustrating to foresee the Steelers' continued success.

Recent weeks saw discussions about Baker possibly losing his starting position to Trask. While this might hold some truth, it's unlikely after this game. Baker retains his familiar traits, including questionable decision-making and an overestimation of his athleticism. Nevertheless, his experience shines through, and his arm strength remains impressive. Considering the Buccaneers' roster strength, Baker should start for their pursuit of a successful season.

Washington Commanders 17 at Cleveland Browns 15

As a Browns fan, I suggest trading Dobbs, releasing Mond, and allowing DTR to serve as the backup. DTR shows immense promise, and kudos to Watson for advocating his draft selection. DTR might eventually succeed Watson in the future.

Speaking frankly, Watson seems to have regained his previous form, resembling his performance before the peculiar incident involving a massage envy during the pandemic. The offense is marked by motion, playmakers, and the prospect of Kevin's comprehensive offensive scheme coming to fruition.

Conversely, the Commanders' offense appears lackluster and mundane. It's clear that without a talent like Mahomes, an offense can appear average. Unfortunately, I believe the Commanders are in a critical position and might witness changes in their coaching staff next year. Despite this, the defense maintains its elite status, and the WR/RB groups continue to impress. The team requires a reset, and I hope Magic Johnson can facilitate that transformation.
